Amazon River Basin

The Amazon River is the second longest river on earth and Rivaled only by the mighty Nile in Africa.  The Amazon River is also home to the largest Rainforest on the planet.  The Amazon River originates in Peru with the Upper Amazon area in Peru consisting of a series of major river systems that flow North and South into the Maranon and Ucayali (major Amazon River tributaries) and the Amazon River.  Approximately 3,980 miles long and at its widest point 7 miles wide during low water season, the Amazon River floods the surrounding plains, and can be up to 28 miles in breath during high water season.
